The Sea Water Sensing Laboratory @ MIO Marseille (SSL@MM) is a marine laboratory situated at the historical Endoume marine station. This laboratory has been entirely thought to bring clean seawater from the bay to benches and ensure representability of the in situ conditions in terms of microbial community, chemical properties and hydrology.

Marine pelagic ecosystems are complex and dynamic, either through physical events triggering biological and chemical distribution at minute scales or through processes that are linked to the fast reactions of planktonic microorganisms thanks to adaptation through intrinsic cellular activities.

From sea to lab= how to ensure CLEAN sea water

The sea waters is prefiltered using a 60 cm high, 2 mm mesh size water strainer positioned at the inlet of the pumping. Pipes are made from polypropylene.

The hydraulic systems inside the laboratory is cleaned twice a month chemically with ~1% H2O2 for 4 hours, and outside with high pressure fresh water by using a special pipe cleaning nozzles that blast the dirt out of the pipes.
